BUILDING THE NBNGC

1
DIVISION OF TEAM MEMBERS INTO BUILDING GROUPS

The next thing was to build the NBNGC. This started was the division of the team members into sub groups according to the mechanisms that were to be designed. It was important to apply the fact that each member had their own special ability and that this would mean a variety of meaningful contribution to the team.

Team Leaders should keep this fact in mind, you don't want to produce a wreckage of a robot.

We divided ourselves into:

-Base Builders(to build driving base)

-Picker & Roller Builder( to build the ball-picking and ball-rolling mechanisms)

-Shooter Builders(to build the ball-shooting mechanism.

A
BUILDING OF A SIMPLE DRIVING BASE

The base builders then kicked off with the building of the driving base of the NBNGC. Again, those who knew more about the motion of the wheel led the wheel assembly and positioning. They decided to use the omni-directional wheel for it could allow smoothing turning at a point and we needed this for instant turning.

The other major part was that of the skeleton of that was to support the wheels and the whole system was to rest upon this base. It had to be a firm structure because it was to be pressed down by the weight. This impacts of  this force was to be dealt away with. This is firm and long metal rods were used as in the diagram.

BUILDING OF A BALL- ROLLER

It was then time to add all the other systems on to the driving base. We started with the roller. This system of incorporated(combined) hardware was to roll up the ball after it was picked. Remember, the robot was to move in search of the ball, then picked up by whatever means and aim then shoot at its designated net.

The roller was designed basing on a conveyor belt kind of system. Rubber material was used because this ensured minimal ware or tear to the balls. This also minimized friction to a much more speed-allowing kind of amount. This robot was built to compete, the ball needed to be rolled-up as quick as possible to reduce on the time.

BUILDING THE BALL-PICKER

The  picker builders then kicked off with the building of the picker system of the NBNGC. It was designed in a form of a dough roller. But this time it was just rubber-band rapped as a binder of two gears. It's a little to hard to imagine the image of this kind of roller but if you look keenly on to the NBNGC images, you shall have to see.

But anyways a few things we put into consideration were the friction between the ball and the picker and this had to be minimized using rubber band, the size of the ball(we ensured not to lower the roller to low that even the ball could reach it. If this even happened, then the ball would struggle to enter and this would cause dislocation of some parts of the roller.

BUILDING OF THE SHOOTER

It was finally time to embed on the shooter mechanism. The shooter was designed in a way it was supposed to squeeze the ball to the extent that it could be shot to the nearest target at game time. This was accomplished by use VEX 2.75" Wheel. They are shot in diameter but thick and this provided a greater force when they contacted the ball.

A pack of these, two pairs each pushed into a different rod and made to stand side by side and then rotated at a reasonably high speed with the ball passing between them, they generate a force that can throw the ball atleast at an elevation of above 45 degrees and through a horizontal distance of greater than 1.5m.
